ASC 815: Derivatives and Hedge Accounting
Description
Derivatives, embedded derivatives, and hedge accounting are all addressed by ASC 815, and together they can be one of the more intimidating areas of U.S. GAAP. Our ASC 815 derivatives and hedge accounting CPE courses bundle all four GAAP Dynamics courses into one comprehensive learning path.
This collection is eligible for 4.0 CPE credits. It begins with freestanding derivatives, including the definition of a derivative and relevant scope exceptions, then moves to embedded derivatives and bifurcation. The final two courses cover hedge accounting, including the available hedging strategies, qualification requirements, effectiveness testing, formal documentation, presentation, and disclosure.
Topics covered include:
- Freestanding derivatives and ASC 815 scope exceptions
- Embedded derivatives and bifurcation
- Hedging strategies
- Qualification for hedge accounting
- Effectiveness testing
- Formal hedge documentation
- Presentation and disclosure requirements
Further details
This four-course collection follows the full ASC 815, Derivatives and Hedging learning path. It begins with freestanding derivatives - the characteristics that define a derivative, the important scope exceptions, and the basic accounting for instruments that fall within ASC 815. The second course then looks at embedded derivatives in hybrid instruments and the analysis required to determine whether an embedded feature must be bifurcated from its host contract.
With that foundation in place, the collection moves into hedge accounting. Learners explore the available hedging strategies and the accounting and reporting consequences of applying a qualifying hedge model. The final course focuses on the requirements that make hedge accounting possible: the hedging relationship and risk being designated, qualifying criteria, formal documentation, and effectiveness testing.
Because the collection includes both halves of ASC 815, it is designed to connect the instrument to the strategy. Learners first understand the derivative itself, then see how that derivative may be used within a qualifying risk-management relationship and how the accounting changes when hedge accounting is applied.
Who will benefit
This collection is designed for accountants, treasury and risk-management teams, controllers, and auditors who want one comprehensive path through both derivative accounting and hedge accounting under ASC 815. It is particularly useful for professionals who need to understand the instrument, embedded features, scope analysis, hedging strategy, documentation, and effectiveness requirements rather than learning those topics in separate silos.
